In a key move for its international expansion strategy and passenger experience optimization, Air India has finalized an agreement with JFK Millennium Partners—the consortium selected by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey to build and operate the new Terminal 6 at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)—to relocate the entirety of its operations to the new facility starting in 2028.
The move places the Indian carrier alongside a select group of 16 top-tier international operators that have already confirmed their presence at T6. Among the Star Alliance global network carriers sharing the terminal are:
- Air Canada
- All Nippon Airways (ANA)
- Austrian Airlines
- Avianca
- Brussels Airlines
- Lufthansa
- SWISS
- TAP Air Portugal
Joining this core group of alliance partners are other major international carriers, including Aer Lingus, Cathay Pacific, Condor, JetBlue, Kuwait Airways, Icelandair, and Norse Atlantic.
Co-locating in a single terminal will enhance Air India’s existing codeshare and interline agreements, enabling seamless, friction-free transfers for connecting passengers traveling onward across the Americas.

Premium Experience Expansion: Debut of the “Maharaja Lounge” on the East Coast
As the centerpiece of its North American ground service product, Air India will build its first flagship East Coast “Maharaja Lounge” in the United States at Terminal 6. This addition follows the recent opening of its premium lounge at San Francisco International Airport.
Key features of the new lounge:
- Footprint: 845 square meters (9,100 square feet).
- Location: Airside, featuring direct views of the terminal’s main commercial district.
- Value Proposition: A blend of traditional Indian hospitality, elevated comfort standards, and world-class amenities.
T6 Project Within the JFK Airport Modernization Framework
The construction of Terminal 6 marks a major milestone in the $19 billion transformation mega-project spearheaded by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey at JFK. The master plan calls for the construction of two brand-new terminals, the expansion and modernization of two existing facilities, a new unified ground transportation center, and a streamlined internal roadway network.
T6 Development Timeline:
- Phase One (2026): Opening of the initial gate allocation.
- Final Phase (2028): Complete terminal completion, opening of remaining gates, and full operational integration.
During the construction phase, Air India will continue uninterrupted operations out of JFK’s Terminal 4. From T4, the airline offers daily non-stop flights to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, utilizing its flagship Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft equipped with its newly retrofitted passenger cabins.

Air India’s Comprehensive Transformation Strategy
This operational shift aligns with the comprehensive restructuring program Air India has undertaken since its privatization in 2022 under the Tata Group. The corporate strategy encompasses:
- Fleet Renewal: Record-breaking order book totaling 600 aircraft.
- Product Modernization: Full cabin interior retrofits across the existing fleet and intake of new aircraft.
- Digital and Infrastructure Transformation: Substantial investment in technology platforms, international network growth, and systematic improvements across all customer touchpoints.
