IndiGo, India’s largest airline and one of the fastest-growing carriers globally, has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CFM International for a record-breaking order of more than 1,000 LEAP-1A engines. The powerplants will power a fleet of 510 Airbus A320neo family aircraft.
The landmark agreement represents the largest single order ever placed for the LEAP engine family, setting an all-time record for CFM International and cementing the Indian subcontinent’s strategic position in global commercial aviation.
Comprehensive MRO Support and Lifecycle Management
Beyond engine supply, the agreement encompasses deep collaboration across the technical support and maintenance chain. CFM will provide end-to-end assistance for the establishment of IndiGo’s upcoming engine Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility.
Furthermore, the memorandum includes a long-term material services agreement ensuring:
- Continuous supply of original spare parts.
- High operational dispatch reliability.
- Predictable and competitive maintenance costs.
- World-class technical backing as the airline scales its international operations.

The relationship between the two organizations spans ten years of continuous operational history:
- 2016: IndiGo launched operations with a sub-fleet of CFM56-5B-powered Airbus A320ceo family aircraft.
- 2019: The carrier deepened its strategic partnership by selecting LEAP-1A engines to power its new Airbus A320/321neo fleet.
- Present: CFM currently supports an active fleet exceeding 375 A320/321 family aircraft across IndiGo’s network.
GE Aerospace and Safran Industrial and MRO Ecosystem in India
India has established itself as CFM International’s third-largest global market, with five airlines operating more than 400 LEAP-powered aircraft and over 2,000 engines on order.
- GE Aerospace Infrastructure: Operates manufacturing facilities in Pune, an extensive network of local suppliers, and an advanced engineering center in Bengaluru.
- Safran Infrastructure: Recently inaugurated its largest MRO center for LEAP engines. The 45,000-square-meter facility will reach a capacity of up to 300 annual shop visits and features a state-of-the-art test cell.

- High-Pressure Turbine (HPT) Durability Kit: Specifically engineered to extend time-on-wing.
- Reverse Bleed System (RBS): A target solution designed to reduce preventive and corrective maintenance workload for airlines.
- Open MRO Ecosystem: Promotes aftermarket competition to ensure high engine availability and a highly competitive total cost of ownership (TCO).
