Palm Beach Airport in Florida has officially changed its name to President Donald J. Trump International Airport. The transition not only alters the terminal’s identity but also includes an helical, unusual update to its three-letter identifier with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
An Identity Change with Legislative and Technical Backing
The renaming of the air terminal is a direct recognition of the Republican leader’s ties to Florida, the state where his Mar-a-Lago residence is located. The process was formalized after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the corresponding legislation last March.
The airport’s name change involves the following key operational and financial details:
- Transition Cost: Airport authorities reported that the name change cost $5.5 million.
- New FAA Identifier: The airport’s three-letter code officially changed from PBI to DJT.
- Passenger Transition Period: Despite the immediate change of the identifier, passengers must continue to use the PBI code to book flights until August 18. From that date onward, the three letters DJT will formally be reflected in airline reservation systems, tickets, and baggage tags.
The first flight to land at the renamed terminal occurred during the pre-dawn hours on Thursday, aboard a private aircraft carrying Eric Trump and his family, thereby ensuring that an aircraft linked to the terminal’s namesake inaugurated operations.

Air Market Impact and Industry Precedents
The Palm Beach terminal is a key hub for Florida’s connectivity. JetBlue Airways is currently the airport’s largest operator. Along with Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, these three carriers account for approximately two-thirds of the terminal’s flights.
Precedents in US Airport Naming
Naming US airports after political figures has several precedents in the industry, although modifying the three-letter code is typically an exception:
- Little Rock Airport (Arkansas): It was named in honor of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but it retained its original code (LIT).
- Other Cases: Air terminals in cities such as Las Vegas and San Jose, California, have also modified their names in the past to pay tribute to former lawmakers.
Context of the Trump Brand Across Institutions
This airport renaming adds to a series of initiatives that have incorporated Donald Trump’s identity into various government bodies and programs since the start of his second presidential term last year.
Among the projects already associated with his name are a new class of Navy warships, a foreign investor visa program, federal child savings accounts, and a government-run prescription drug website. Additionally, in Washington, his name was added to the United States Institute of Peace building, while courts dismissed attempts to apply it to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
