TAP Air Portugal Resumes Flights to Venezuela with Valencia as a Temporary Strategic Hub
TAP Air Portugal will resume operations to Venezuela on July 13, temporarily adapting its route following the suspension caused by recent earthquakes that affected the country. The resumption of these connections will not only gradually restore bilateral air connectivity but will also serve as a key assistance channel through the transport of humanitarian cargo.
Gradual Restoration and Temporary Airport Change
The Portuguese flag carrier will reactivate its links to the South American nation, albeit under a modified operational framework due to current contingencies.
- New Provisional Terminal: During this initial contingency phase, flights will operate to Arturo Michelena International Airport, located in the city of Valencia.
- Operational Transition: This provisional route will remain active while the necessary work and assessments are carried out to allow a safe return to the airline’s regular, scheduled operations to Caracas.

Technical Stop and Crew Logistics
For strictly operational and safety reasons, the airline has designed an itinerary that minimizes the ground time of its assets on Venezuelan soil:
- Stopover in Guadeloupe: Flights to Valencia will make a technical stop at Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe.
- Crew Rotation: The airline’s crews will layover and remain on the Caribbean island. No aircraft or crews are scheduled to remain overnight in Venezuelan territory during this phase.
Humanitarian Logistics: 8.7 Metric Tons of Medical Supplies
The resumption flight will feature a high-priority social assistance component. TAP will utilize its belly cargo capacity to transport approximately 8.7 metric tons of medical supplies intended to support populations affected by the seismic activity.
This effort is being carried out under strict institutional coordination:
- Governmental Articulation: The shipment is being executed in conjunction with the Portuguese Government and the nation’s Ministry of Health.
- Aid Coordination: The management of Portuguese humanitarian assistance is centralized and overseen by the Camões Institute.
The airline detailed that it has joined this collective effort by providing its cargo logistics capacity to ensure the delivery of these essential materials, responding directly to the ongoing emergency.
TAP Air Portugal’s executive board emphasized that it continues to conduct rigorous, ongoing monitoring of the evolving situation in Venezuela. The company’s ultimate goal remains to restore normalcy to its scheduled operations to Caracas, a step that will be taken as soon as conditions of absolute safety and operational viability are fully guaranteed.
