In what has been described as one of the most significant fleet expansion programs in the history of Bangladeshi civil aviation, US-Bangla Airlines has announced the acquisition of 21 aircraft from US manufacturer Boeing. The agreement, valued at approximately $1.5 billion, was officially unveiled in Dhaka during a corporate event titled “Beyond with Boeing.”
The transaction entails the phased delivery of 15 Boeing 737-8s and six Boeing 737-800s, all structured under lease agreements with deliveries scheduled to be completed by late 2027.
Route Network Expansion: Connecting Asia and the Middle East
In a press release, the carrier specified that this fleet growth will enable it to deploy scheduled operations to a wide array of strategic international destinations:
- India: Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
- Sri Lanka: Colombo.
- Nepal: Kathmandu.
- China: Kunming, Shenzhen, and Beijing.
- Malaysia: Johor Bahru and Penang.
- East Asia: Key destinations in South Korea and Japan.
- Middle East: Kuwait; Bahrain; Medina and Dammam (Saudi Arabia); and Salalah (Oman).
From Airline to Fully Integrated Aviation Group
Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, Managing Director of US-Bangla Group and US-Bangla Airlines, highlighted the strategic scope of the agreement for the country’s commercial aviation sector:
“This investment represents far more than a fleet expansion. It reflects our long-term vision to transform US-Bangla from an airline into a fully integrated global aviation group. We are investing in aircraft, personnel, technology, training, maintenance, cargo, catering, and infrastructure to support the sustainable growth of Bangladesh’s aviation sector.”
Al Mamun further revealed that foreign carriers currently capture nearly 70% of total passenger traffic on Bangladesh’s international routes, underscoring a significant commercial market opportunity for domestic operators.
Human Capital Development and Bilateral Relations
During the event, US Chargé d’Affaires to Bangladesh, Brent T. Christensen, described the deal as a historic milestone and called Boeing the “best business case” for the Asian nation.
A core pillar highlighted during the announcement was the commitment to human capital development. US-Bangla Airlines plans to send approximately 200 Bangladeshi pilots to the United States for advanced flight instruction and training, representing a major investment in professionalizing the next generation of flight crew. Christensen added that the agreement strengthens economic ties between both nations by combining American technological innovation with local entrepreneurial drive.
With the planned integration of these 21 Boeing aircraft through 2027, infrastructure enhancements at Dhaka Airport, and the advanced training of flight and technical personnel, US-Bangla Airlines aims to solidify its regional position, capture market share from foreign carriers, and support Bangladesh’s broader economic growth and connectivity goals.
