Wizz Air has announced the opening of its first operational bases in Spain, located at Madrid and Valencia airports. Scheduled for this coming November, this expansion marks a major milestone in the ultra-low-cost carrier’s (ULCC) strategy, substantially increasing its seat capacity, destination network, and job creation within the country.
Valencia and Madrid: Wizz Air’s New Operational Hubs
Until now, the airline had operated out of 16 Spanish airports and transported over 15 million passengers throughout its 22-year history, but it lacked permanent bases in the country. This dynamic will shift radically starting in November, backed by a heavy investment in next-generation aircraft.
Valencia Operational Base
The first of the two facilities is set to begin operations on November 2.
- Assigned Fleet: Two Airbus A321neo aircraft.
- Capacity: A 76% increase at the Valencian airport, reaching 3.6 million seats on sale.
- Connectivity: A total of 23 routes serving eight countries.
- Labor Impact: Creation of over 80 direct jobs and more than 2,500 indirect employment opportunities.

Madrid Operational Base
One day later, on November 3, the capital’s base will officially open.
- Assigned Fleet: Two Airbus A321neo aircraft.
- Capacity: A 48% boost in capacity, making 4.8 million seats available.
- Connectivity: 27 routes connecting with 12 countries.
- Labor Impact: Anticipating over 80 direct jobs and more than 3,000 indirect positions.
New Route Network: Boosting Domestic and International Connectivity
The launch of these operational hubs will allow Wizz Air to diversify its network by introducing 11 new domestic routes and five international services, optimizing connectivity for both leisure and business travelers.
- From Madrid: New flights will be added to Asturias, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela, and Pisa.
- From Valencia: Connections will open to Asturias, Santiago de Compostela, Santander, Bilbao, Palma de Mallorca, Brasov, and Naples.
Wizz Air Chief Executive Officer, József Váradi, reaffirmed the airline’s long-term commitment to the Spanish market, explaining that establishing these operational bases reflects a clear intent to continue expanding its physical footprint, route network, and passenger capacity in the country. With this strategic move, the carrier is solidly positioning itself to capture a larger market share across Spain’s primary aviation hubs.
