Google to Acquire Spirit Airlines Corporate Data for Product Development and AI Training

Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has agreed to purchase internal corporate data from Spirit Airlines for $10 million to support product development and artificial intelligence (AI) model training. The transaction comes within the framework of the ultra-low-cost carrier’s bankruptcy proceedings and remains subject to judicial approval.

Agreement Details and Data Scope

The deal encompasses a significant volume of corporate and operational information accumulated by the airline. Digital assets included in the sale comprise:

Court Proceedings and Competing Bids

The sale of these digital assets forms part of the liquidation process following the permanent cessation of the carrier’s operations in May, driven by high debt levels and rising fuel costs.

A U.S. bankruptcy judge will evaluate the agreement for approval during a court hearing scheduled for Wednesday. Notably, the bidding process for the airline’s data also included a $7.5 million offer from Mercor, an AI data specialist firm.

The final outcome hinges on the ruling issued by the bankruptcy court at Wednesday’s hearing. If Google’s offer is ratified, the proceeds will contribute to the airline’s asset liquidation and restructuring process.
