SWISS Strengthens Its Geneva Base with Addition of Higher-Capacity Aircraft
Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) announced on Monday a strategic restructuring of the fleet assigned to its Geneva International Airport base ahead of the summer 2027 season. The carrier will replace two Airbus A220-300 aircraft with two Airbus A320neos, aiming to boost seat capacity on its highest-density routes and consolidate its footprint in Switzerland’s French-speaking region.
Fleet Adjustment and Increased Operational Capacity
The equipment swap represents a direct increase in the number of seats available per frequency:
- Airbus A220-300: Previously configured with 145 seats.
- Airbus A320neo: Provides a capacity of 180 seats, yielding an additional 35 seats per flight.
This inventory optimization will enable SWISS to absorb sustained demand across key corporate and leisure routes without requiring additional airport slots.
Strategic Focus on the Geneva–London Heathrow Route
The two incoming Airbus A320neos will be primarily deployed on the route connecting Geneva with London Heathrow Airport, one of the highest-traffic and most commercially vital links in the airline’s western Swiss network.
Through this deployment, SWISS aims to maximize route profitability while expanding seat supply for corporate travelers and global connecting passengers.
“This sends a strong signal for our Geneva base,” said Jens Fehlinger, CEO of SWISS. “We want to secure our position in Geneva for the long term and continue to strengthen it through targeted measures. An attractive, demand-oriented, and profitable route network plays a decisive role in achieving this goal.”
SWISS will finalize the operational details of its summer 2027 schedule in the coming weeks.
