Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has selected American Airlines as the anchor airline to operate out of its upcoming West Terminal, marking the construction of the facility’s first new terminal building in nearly four decades. A Landmark Partnership for the First New Terminal in 40 Years
This designation cements nearly a century of the carrier’s operational presence in Phoenix and propels Sky Harbor into its next phase of development as an international hub. The future West Terminal serves as a core component of Destination PHX 2050, the comprehensive master development program that defines and guides the airport’s capital investments.
Through this collaboration with the City of Phoenix and airport authorities, the new passenger complex will incorporate premier spaces to elevate the customer experience and accommodate growing travel demand.

American Airlines currently stands as the airport’s largest operator:
- Market Share: Accounts for approximately 40% of total passenger traffic in Phoenix.
- Passenger Volume: Transports more than 20 million customers annually through the air terminal.
- Daily Operations: Registers peaks of over 300 daily departures to more than 100 nonstop destinations.
- Workforce Impact: Employs 8,000 workers across the state of Arizona.
- Network Reach: Connects Arizona and the American Southwest with points across North America, Hawaii, Europe, and other international destinations.
