Istanbul Airport Inaugurates Its Sixth Runway
Istanbul Airport (iGA Istanbul Airport) has officially inaugurated its fourth main runway, bringing the total number of operational runways across the complex to six. Representing an investment of €890 million, this infrastructure marks the first completed milestone under the hub’s Phase 2 expansion program.
Operational Capacity Expansion: Technical Specifications of the New Runway
The commissioning of this new strip substantially enhances operational flexibility and throughput for the Turkish hub.
Technical Specifications and Layout
- Dimensions: The newly constructed concrete runway measures 2,820 meters (9,252 feet) in length and 45 meters (148 feet) in width.
- Tactical Alignment: Unlike the airport’s existing runway configuration, the new runway is aligned along an East-West axis.
- Airfield Integration: This new takeoff and landing surface joins the three main runways and two auxiliary runways already in service, which run along a North-South alignment.
With this latest addition, the airport now operates four main runways and two secondary strips, consolidating an overall operational footprint of six runways.
Official Ribbon-Cutting and Integrated Infrastructure Development
The formal commissioning ceremony was attended by the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu.
During the event, Cemal Kalyoncu, Chairman of the Board of iGA, emphasized the project’s strategic scope:
“The fourth runway is an important milestone in a flagship project turning Turkey’s global ambitions into reality. Istanbul Airport is the tangible realization of the grand vision established for Turkey by our Esteemed President, Recep Erdogan. We have worked tirelessly toward the goal of establishing a premier global transfer hub in Istanbul.”
New Facilities for Commercial Passengers and Business Aviation
Coinciding with the runway opening, the airport also unveiled Florentia Village, billed as Turkey’s first international-standard luxury designer outlet project.
This inauguration builds upon several recent key operational milestones across the airport grounds:
- The opening of the 485-room Hilton Istanbul Airport hotel.
- The entry into service of the dedicated JETEX-iGA general aviation terminal (FBO), custom-designed to handle business aviation flights, crews, and private jet passengers.
Consolidation as a Global Mega-Hub
With this Phase 2 development now on line, Istanbul Airport further solidifies its international strategic footing, cementing the city’s role as one of the world’s preeminent global air transit and connecting hubs.
