Qantas has officially confirmed the launch of its first commercial nonstop flights between Sydney and New York starting in mid-2028. This historic ultra-long-haul connection is part of the ambitious Project Sunrise initiative, slashing overall travel times by more than three hours compared to current one-stop itineraries.
A Historic Milestone in Transpacific Connectivity
The route between Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport and New York marks the first scheduled nonstop service between Australia’s East Coast and the premier US metropolis. Tickets for the inaugural flight will go on sale in August 2027.
This point-to-point connection will allow passengers to board in Sydney and touch down in New York approximately 18 hours later without technical stops or layovers.
New York now stands formally as the second confirmed route under Project Sunrise, joining nonstop services between Sydney and London, which are scheduled to commence in October 2027.
Background and Operational Evolution of the Route
- 1958: Qantas first operated into New York as part of its inaugural round-the-world service, routing from Sydney with technical and commercial stops in Fiji, Honolulu, and San Francisco.
- Present: The carrier currently operates a daily one-way frequency between Sydney and New York with an intermediate stopover in Auckland, New Zealand.

Fleet and Configuration: The Airbus A350-1000ULR
To bring these ultra-long-range intercontinental missions to fruition, Qantas will introduce a fleet of 12 Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, factory-built to direct specifications tailored to the Australian flag carrier’s operational requirements.
Technical Aircraft Specifications
- Extended Fuel Capacity: Addition of an extra 20,000-liter center fuel tank, pushing its range beyond 16,000 kilometers (approx. 8,640 nautical miles) or up to 22 hours of uninterrupted flight.
- Low-Density Cabin Layout: Premium interior configuration accommodating a total of 238 seats across four cabin classes.
- Inflight Wellbeing: Introduction of a purpose-built Wellbeing Zone—an industry first in commercial aviation—alongside cabin lighting schemes and inflight catering tailored to chronobiology and sleep-science research for ultra-long-haul sectors.
The first test airframe of this variant recently completed a 24-hour, 24-minute nonstop proving flight between Melbourne and Toulouse, France, establishing a new record and benchmark for commercial aircraft worldwide. The aircraft is currently in the final stages of its flight test and type certification campaign, with initial customer delivery slated for April next year.
Qantas Group Chief Executive Officer Vanessa Hudson underscored the route confirmation as a defining moment in the history of air connectivity between both nations:
“Overcoming the tyranny of distance has been in Qantas’ DNA from the very beginning. Flying nonstop to New York completes a vision we set out to achieve many years ago (…). New York has always captured the imagination, and for generations, reaching it from Australia meant breaking the journey somewhere along the way. Starting in 2028, our customers will be able to board in Sydney and arrive in New York roughly 18 hours later without a single stop, shaving around three hours off today’s fastest flight times. Flying these extreme distances is only worth doing if our customers arrive feeling their absolute best, and that conviction has shaped everything we have engineered.”
Operational Readiness and Crew Training
Ahead of initial aircraft delivery, Qantas line pilots have already begun simulator training and type-rating curricula on Australia’s first full-flight simulator (FFS) for the Airbus A350, installed in Sydney.
The airline has rolled out a comprehensive training pipeline that will ultimately qualify more than 360 flight crew members and 1,200 cabin crew members, ensuring full operational readiness across the Project Sunrise fleet once all 12 A350-1000ULR airframes are delivered.
