United Airlines has become the first carrier worldwide to take delivery of an aircraft powered by the new Pratt & Whitney GTF Advantage™ engines, marking this milestone with the handover of its first Airbus A321XLR. This addition represents the commercial debut of the latest single-aisle powerplant evolution from the U.S. engine manufacturer, an RTX business business unit.
A New Chapter in a Century-Old Relationship
The delivery of this Airbus A321XLR reinforces the long-standing partnership between the airline and the engine maker.
Rick Deurloo, President of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, emphasized the significance of the achievement: “The first delivery of a GTF Advantage-powered aircraft to United Airlines represents a new chapter in our relationship, which spans nearly a century. United will be the first to benefit from the GTF Advantage engine’s world-class fuel efficiency, durability, and additional thrust capability, which is particularly well suited for the long-range A321XLR.”
Meanwhile, Ankit Gupta, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at United Airlines, highlighted the role of technology in the airline’s forward strategy:

Technical Performance: Increased Thrust, Extended Range, and Enhanced Durability
The GTF Advantage engine features the most advanced hot section in the single-aisle market, introducing engineering enhancements designed specifically to maximize profitability and operational utility for extended-range narrowbodies like the Airbus A321XLR:
- Greater Time on Wing: Delivers up to double the time on wing compared to the current-generation GTF model.
- Thrust Increase: Provides 4% to 8% more takeoff thrust, unlocking greater payload-range capability.
- Fleet Interchangeability: Fully interchangeable and intermixable with the current-specification GTF engine, streamlining line operations, parts inventory, and maintenance logistics for mixed-engine fleets.
Production Roadmap and Retrofit Upgrades for In-Service Fleets
The manufacturer has outlined a transition schedule to phase this new standard across its manufacturing and aftermarket pipeline:
- Assembly Line Transition: Pratt & Whitney will convert its entire PW1100G-JM production line to the Advantage specification by 2028.
- GTF Hot Section Plus (HS+) Upgrade Package: Current-generation GTF operators can capture 90% to 95% of the GTF Advantage’s durability benefits through the GTF Hot Section Plus (HS+) upgrade package for the PW1100G-JM powerplant. This hardware upgrade will become available for incorporation during scheduled engine shop visits beginning early next year.
With the induction of this first GTF Advantage-powered Airbus A321XLR, United Airlines kicks off commercial operations for the upgraded propulsion platform, poised to optimize point-to-point long-haul missions across the airline’s narrowbody network.
