United Automates Disruption Management: New Mobile Feature Allows Passengers to Join Standby Lists for Earlier Flights

United Airlines has introduced an industry-first digital tool within its mobile app, engineered to restore flexibility to passengers following flight schedule disruptions. The feature enables rebooked customers to automatically join the standby list for up to three earlier flights, tracking seat availability in the background and notifying the user in real time without forfeiting their confirmed reservation.

Operational Innovation: Real-Time Standby Automation

During irregular operations (IROPS)—such as cancellations or severe delays—a primary friction point for passengers is the uncertainty and constant need to monitor earlier flight openings or queue up at airport customer service counters.

With this new release, the United Airlines platform eliminates manual tracking by the passenger. If a customer is rebooked onto a later flight due to an operational disruption, the system allows them to select up to three earlier flights that fit their schedule. Behind the scenes, the carrier’s IT infrastructure monitors available seat inventory and sends a text message (SMS) alert as soon as a seat opens up. The passenger can then confirm the change or remain on their assigned flight, retaining their original confirmed booking until a decision is made.

This enhancement strengthens the airline’s suite of self-service digital recovery tools, which already allow passengers to manage flight rebookings, receive hotel and meal vouchers when applicable, and track checked baggage.

Strategic Rollout for peak Labor Day Travel

The tool’s rollout is strategically timed with the start of the Labor Day holiday weekend in the United States, one of the year’s peak demand periods for commercial air travel.

“This feature reflects our commitment to making travel smoother and less stressful for our customers,” said Jennifer Schwierzke, Vice President of Customer Strategy, Execution and Operations at United Airlines. “During disruptions, customers can keep their confirmed itinerary while being on the standby list for three additional flights. We work behind the scenes to monitor availability and alert customers the moment a seat opens up.”

Three-Step Passenger Workflow

The in-app workflow has been streamlined to ensure intuitive navigation:

  1. Enrollment: The user adds themselves to the standby list for up to three flights scheduled prior to their new, rebooked departure time.
  2. Passive Monitoring: The airline’s platform automatically tracks seat inventory across the selected flights.
  3. Notification and Confirmation: When a seat becomes available, the passenger receives an SMS alert and decides whether to accept the flight change, maintaining their original booking until confirmation is submitted.

Evolution of the United Airlines Digital Ecosystem

This new functionality joins a series of recent updates designed to optimize the end-to-end passenger journey and provide predictive visibility before and during terminal transit:

Through the implementation of this automated standby engine, United Airlines advances the decentralization of ground handling and customer service. By mitigating the need for face-to-face interactions during peak congestion or weather contingencies, the airline optimizes airport staffing resources while empowering travelers with full visibility and real-time control over their flight options.
