As part of a comprehensive cabin retrofit and passenger experience modernization program, American Airlines has announced plans to outfit its entire mainline fleet with Starlink satellite in-flight connectivity. The move significantly expands upon an earlier announcement made this past May, when the carrier initially outlined plans to install the high-speed system across more than 500 Airbus aircraft. With this latest fleet-wide commitment, the program will encompass over 1,000 mainline aircraft, positioning American to operate one of the largest commercial airline fleets powered by the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network globally.
Installation work is slated to officially begin in early 2027.
Onboard Connectivity Technology and Technical Performance
The technical deployment will center around the installation of the specialized Starlink Performance Aero Terminal, engineered to meet high-demand inflight data requirements:
- Data Throughput: Capable of delivering bandwidth speeds of up to 1 Gbps per terminal.
- Seamless Coverage: True gate-to-gate connectivity, operating continuously throughout all phases of flight.
- High-Bandwidth Support: Robust network stability capable of supporting bandwidth-intensive applications, including live video streaming, low-latency online gaming, real-time enterprise collaboration, high-speed web browsing, e-commerce, and social media.

Commenting on the strategic rollout, American Airlines Chief Customer Officer (CCO) Heather Garboden stated:
“Our customers have made it clear that reliable inflight connectivity can fundamentally transform how they spend their time in the air. Whether they are streaming their favorite shows, gaming online, collaborating in real time on high-stakes business deals, catching up on social channels, or shopping online, Starlink will provide endless opportunities to make the most of their travel. Equally important, this infrastructure lays the groundwork for future product innovations that will continue to elevate the passenger experience.”
Mainline Fleet Deployment Scope
The satellite Wi-Fi service will be uniformly deployed across the carrier’s global route network, spanning all four of its core mainline aircraft families.
American Airlines currently operates an active mainline fleet exceeding 1,030 aircraft, broken down as follows:
- Airbus Narrowbody Aircraft: Over 500 units.
- Boeing Narrowbody Aircraft: Over 400 units.
- Boeing Widebody Aircraft: Over 130 units.
Passenger Projections and Future Expansion
More than 165 million passengers travel aboard American Airlines mainline aircraft annually. That passenger volume is projected to grow steadily, underpinned by the carrier’s robust fleet orderbook, which calls for the delivery of more than 300 new mainline aircraft over the coming years. Standardizing this inflight connectivity hardware across both existing airframes and future deliveries ensures a uniform, high-performance digital passenger experience as new airframes enter commercial line operations.
