British Airways has announced the next phase in the overhaul of its lounge network at London Heathrow Airport. The ambitious plan includes the opening of a new lounge at Terminal 5’s C Gates, a comprehensive refurbishment of its Arrivals Lounge, and an exclusive shared First check-in zone at Terminal 3 in partnership with American Airlines.
This initiative represents one of the largest lounge investments in the British carrier’s history and marks the first phase of an extensive master plan set to redesign every single one of its Heathrow facilities over the coming years. The project forms part of an end-to-end customer experience transformation spanning curb-to-gate, inflight service, and arrival at the final destination.
New T5 C Gates Lounge: British Design and a 17-Meter Central Bar
The centerpiece of the announcement is a brand-new premium lounge located at Terminal 5, Concourse C (Gates C), where construction is already underway ahead of a planned late-2028 opening. Designed under the airline’s latest brand aesthetic, the facility will boast sweeping panoramic views across the airfield apron and terminal grounds.
Key highlights of the project include:
- Locally Sourced Materials and Heritage: Incorporation of British craftsmanship, natural timber finishes, architectural glazing, intricate metalwork, textiles, and bespoke furnishings sourced across the United Kingdom.
- Functional Spaces: Dedicated zones for fine dining, relaxation, productivity/work, and pre-flight shower suites.
- Feature Central Bar: A 17-meter centerpiece bar projected to rank among the longest in any airport terminal worldwide.
- Exclusive Concorde Lounge: A dedicated private enclave featuring bespoke concierge service, elevated dining, enhanced privacy, and a refined atmosphere of rich textures and darker palettes tailored for long-haul passengers departing from Concourse C.
Comprehensive Overhaul of Terminal 5 Arrivals Lounge
British Airways has also set in motion plans to fully renovate its Terminal 5 Arrivals Lounge—marking the first arrivals facility developed under the carrier’s newly introduced design ethos.
According to the official timeline, construction is slated to commence in early 2027, with inauguration scheduled for late 2028. The space is purposefully configured around the needs of premium passengers deplaning from long-haul flights:
- Passenger Comfort Amenities: A craft coffee and deli bar, expanded dining areas, quiet relaxation zones, and private workstation pods.
- Wellness and Grooming: 59 individual shower cubicles, premium shower suites, and dedicated dressing and grooming facilities.
- Concorde Arrivals: First Class passengers will have access to private cabanas, an exclusive dining room, and an interior palette rooted in the airline’s signature deep navy, speedbird red, and warm ivory, framed by acoustic glass partitions to maximize privacy.
Joint T3 First Check-In Area with American Airlines
Looking ahead to this winter, British Airways and transatlantic joint business partner American Airlines will unveil an enhanced, co-branded First Class check-in experience at Heathrow Terminal 3.
The space will feature a rich red visual palette inspired by British Airways’ Terminal 5 “The First Wing” and the airline’s broader lounge design language, providing eligible premium and elite status flyers across both carriers with a seamless, expedited ground departure experience.
Global Expansion and Fleet Modernization: The Airbus A380 Retrofit Program
The Heathrow project builds upon recent BA premium lounge openings and refurbishments in Miami (MIA), Glasgow (GLA), Seattle (SEA), and Washington Dulles (IAD). Refurbishment works are currently progressing at Boston (BOS) and Newark (EWR), with Geneva (GVA) and San Francisco (SFO) scheduled for upgrades next year.
Running in parallel with ground infrastructure upgrades, the carrier continues executing an overarching capital strategy covering passenger-facing technology, operational resilience, and fleet modernization. As part of this fleet-wide commitment, British Airways reiterated the full cabin retrofit program across its Airbus A380 fleet.
The first fully retrofitted Superjumbo will enter scheduled commercial service in the coming months, featuring nose-to-tail interior overhauls. This includes brand-new cabins across First, Club World (business class), World Traveller Plus (premium economy), and World Traveller (economy). The campaign represents one of the most complex widebody cabin retrofits in commercial aviation history, requiring the integration of over 35,000 individual part numbers per airframe.
