Norse Atlantic Airways to Lease Two Boeing 787-9s to Pakistan International Airlines

Norwegian carrier Norse Atlantic Airways has agreed to lease two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners to flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), a strategic move aimed at bolstering its finances and reinforcing its wet-lease capacity business model.

Flight operations for the Pakistani airline are scheduled to begin in November 2026.

This agreement enables Norse to secure a key ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) contract, an operating structure under which the airline leases its aircraft and flight crews to external carriers in exchange for a fixed rate.

The partnership comes after India’s largest airline, IndiGo, announced in July that it would terminate its wet-lease contract with the Norwegian group.

Business Model Shift and Operating Cost Mitigation

In response to surging aviation jet fuel costs, Norse has steadily scaled back its exposure to low-cost transatlantic operations to focus more aggressively on its ACMI business.

The airline’s management highlighted the operational and commercial benefits of this approach:

Fleet and Strategic Review

Norse Atlantic Airways currently operates a fleet of 12 Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

Alongside restructuring its commercial operations, the low-cost carrier launched a formal sales or merger process in July to establish its long-term corporate direction and ensure ongoing financial viability.
