Southwest Airlines has announced a comprehensive restructuring of its Rapid Rewards frequent flyer program—a strategic evolution set for a phased rollout beginning in November 2026 and extending throughout 2027. The overhaul introduces a redesigned tier structure featuring a new top-tier Platinum status, milestone rewards, international airline partnerships, the debut of its first airport lounges, and high-speed fleetwide Wi-Fi connectivity.
New Tier Structure: Introducing Platinum Status
Effective January 1, 2027, the carrier will revamp its membership framework to establish a three-tier elite program:
- Silver: Replaces the current A-List tier.
- Gold: Replaces the current A-List Preferred tier.
- Platinum: Established as the program’s highest tier, featuring unlimited travel privileges via the carrier’s signature Companion Pass benefit.
Rapid Rewards will retain its core hallmark benefits: points never expire, there are no blackout dates for award redemptions, and members maintain flexible qualifying options via eligible flights and Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs).

Milestone Rewards and Accelerated Earning for Co-Branded Cardholders
The updated framework introduces Milestone Rewards, allowing loyalty members to unlock tangible perks prior to reaching full elite thresholds:
- Prior to achieving Silver status: Travelers can select interim perks such as bonus Rapid Rewards points or seat upgrade vouchers.
- Between Gold and Platinum tiers: Members will be eligible to earn three promotional Companion Pass flights.
Additionally, starting January 2027, all Chase Rapid Rewards credit cardholders (including Plus cardholders) will earn one TQP per dollar spent on eligible purchases, accelerating progress toward elite tier qualification.
“Rapid Rewards was built on a simple premise: make earning and using rewards easy for customers. As our members engage more with Southwest, they’ve shared that they want to be recognized in more meaningful ways—whether advancing toward status or redeeming their points. These updates directly reflect that feedback, rewarding members across every stage of their Southwest journey while maintaining the simplicity and value that have always defined our program,” said Nandika Suri, Vice President of Rapid Rewards at Southwest Airlines.
Expanded Redemption Channels: Global Airline Alliances and Seat Selection
Southwest Airlines is also set to broaden redemption options across multiple channels:
- International Airline Partnerships (Spring 2027): Members will be able to earn and redeem Rapid Rewards points on flights operated by international partner carriers, launching initially with Icelandair, China Airlines, and Etihad Airways. This will unlock access to global routes including Reykjavik to Paris, Taipei to Tokyo, and Abu Dhabi to Johannesburg.
- Seat Selection (Late 2027): Passengers will be able to redeem points to select specific seats on Southwest-operated flights, including extra-legroom and preferred seating.
- Car Rentals (November 2026): Rolling out ahead of the broader updates, members will be permitted to redeem points directly with all participating rental car partners via cars.southwest.com.
Ground and In-Flight Experience: Southwest Icon Lounges and Starlink In-Flight Connectivity
As part of a comprehensive service enhancement, the Dallas-based carrier will roll out major passenger experience upgrades through 2027:
Southwest Icon Lounge Network
Targeting a late-2027 rollout, the airline will enter the airport lounge space with the debut of its proprietary Southwest Icon Lounge network, developed in partnership with Chase. These spaces will feature premium amenities, regionally inspired architecture, and a tribute to Southwest’s 55-year history grounded in the customer-centric philosophy championed by co-founder Herb Kelleher. Access will be reserved exclusively for cardholders of a new premium Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card issued by Chase, scheduled to launch in 2027.
Fleetwide Starlink Satellite In-Flight Connectivity
By fall 2027, Southwest aims to become the first major US carrier to achieve 100% fleetwide deployment of Starlink’s satellite connectivity system. The service will deliver gate-to-gate, high-speed Wi-Fi and will be offered free of charge to all Rapid Rewards members courtesy of an ongoing partnership with telecommunications carrier T-Mobile.
With full implementation scheduled between late 2026 and year-end 2027, Southwest Airlines aims to strengthen the value proposition of Rapid Rewards by delivering tangible enhancements spanning elite status qualification, in-flight passenger comfort, and ground terminal services.
