The new Berlin International Airport (BER) will open on October 31st, with a nine-year delay and a cost much higher than the initial forecasts, the project’s general director confirmed on Tuesday, reported AFP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The BER will open on October 31st, 2020. The German capital will finally have an airport that meets international standards,” said Engelbert L\u00fctke Daldrup at a press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terminal 1 of this airport, located south of Berlin, will open from this date with the landing of the first Lufthansa and EasyJet aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current Sch\u00f6nefeld airport, also south of the capital, will become terminal 5. Other terminals will not open until next year due to the decrease of activity due to the epidemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The construction of this airport, which started in 2006 and was initially planned to be completed by the end of 2010, was considerably delayed due to negligence and serious design errors. The cost of this new airport, initially estimated at 1.7 billion euros (1.98 billion dollars), amounted to 6.5 billion euros (7.57 billion dollars).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the epidemic, with the explosion of tourism and new arrivals in the capital, the BER, located 25 kilometers from the Brandenburg Gate, was already considered undersized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airport of Tegel, in the northwest of Berlin, will close its doors on November 8th after a last flight of the company Air France to Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/amp-auto-ads>\n\n\n\n
