Mexico’s low-cost airline Volaris<\/strong> would record positive results in December and return to profit in the second quarter of 2021, when it is likely to be operating at nearly 100% capacity, the company’s chief executive officer, Enrique Beltranena, said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volaris, which has become the country’s largest airline in terms of passenger traffic, has suffered the onslaught of the coronavirus in the sector that undermined demand for travelers, but has fared better during the pandemic than its main rivals thanks to its business model focused on offering low prices, Reuters<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Moving forward, we believe there are great opportunities,” the executive said during an interview with Reuters. “In December we will definitely make money, but I do not want to anticipate the results,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beltranena said that the company currently operates above 90% capacity, and that although in the first three months of next year demand would decrease due to seasonal factors, by June it is expected to recover almost its full flight capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I believe that (the vacation period of) Easter can be an important turning point,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The executive also said that the company is still evaluating the opportune moment to carry out a capital increase for 3,500 million pesos (US$ 175 million) which was approved in September by its shareholders’ meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is a timing issue and it will have a lot to do with the markets; that is, it has to do with whether there are opportunities to make a transaction of that type,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
