Indonesian authorities located the black boxes of the Sriwijaya Air<\/strong> plane that crashed at sea shortly after take-off from Jakarta on Sunday, when human body parts and parts of the plane were recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boeing 737-500, with 62 people on board, was headed for Pontianak in West Kalimantan on Saturday before disappearing from radar screens four minutes after takeoff, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head of Indonesia’s National Committee for Transport Security (KNKT), Soerjanto Tjahjono, said the locations of the two black boxes on flight SJ182 had been identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are still no clues as to what might have happened to the plane. This is the first major plane crash in Indonesia since 189 people died in 2018 when a Boeing 737 Max from Lion Air also crashed into the Java Sea shortly after taking off from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight tracking service, Flightradar24, said the aircraft took off at 2:36 p.m. local time and reached 10,900 feet in four minutes. It then began a steep descent and stopped transmitting data 21 seconds later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are in touch with our airline customers and are ready to support them during this difficult time,” Boeing said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 2003, the Jakarta-based Sriwijaya Air Group flies mainly within the vast Indonesian archipelago. The low-cost carrier has a strong safety record, with no onboard fatalities in four incidents recorded in the Air Safety Network database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
