A bill proposing to declare “of national interest” the creation of a flag carrier airline in Peru, with state financing, has generated controversy and rejection from sectors linked to this activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to its promoters, the purpose of the project, approved on Wednesday by the Congressional Transportation Commission, is to promote public investment for the creation of a Peruvian airline with low-cost fares, in an open and free competition air commercial market, on domestic and foreign routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last flag carrier in the country was AeroPer\u00fa, a company that was privatized during Alberto Fujimori’s government (1990-2000) as part of a strategy to disassociate the State from a series of commercial activities, EFE reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The text proposes that the creation of the Peruvian Flag Airline (ALPERU) be declared of national interest and of preferential public need to provide scheduled and non-scheduled air transport services for passengers and cargo, both nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The capital stock of ALPERU will be determined by the National Fund for the Financing of the State Entrepreneurial Activity (FONAFE) after a study and technical analysis by aeronautical specialists and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications”, states the bill submitted by the opposition bench of the Acci\u00f3n Popular (AP) party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also stated that the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) will constitute the initial capital of the airline and that “the national investment will be 100% of the public capital stock”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the approval of the project was made known, the main business associations manifested themselves to request that this proposal be discarded for lack of technical justification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
