Passengers departing from Miami International Airport<\/strong> will soon be able to board their international flights with just the quick, touchless click of a camera, thanks to a recently approved contract that will implement biometric boarding at all of MIA\u2019s 130-plus gates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Installation is expected to be fully completed in 2023. When finished, the project will be the largest implementation of biometric technology at any U.S. airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The launch of biometric boarding at MIA is the latest step in how Miami-Dade County is leveraging technology to improve customer service and streamline operations,” says Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “I am proud to see our airport leading the way in the U.S. with this cutting-edge innovation that will streamline the boarding process for our passengers.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With SITA’s Smart Path solution, which leverages NEC’s biometric identity platform, passengers simply pose in front of a camera at the gate and their photo will be used to confirm, in seconds, their identity and authorization to travel. Miami International Airport and U.S. Customs and Border Control CBP first tested biometric boarding in 2019 during a pilot program with select airlines, leading to a significant improvement in boarding times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We look forward to enhancing the passenger experience with this state-of-the-art boarding solution,” said Ralph Cuti\u00e9, executive director of Miami International Airport. “MIA is now the busiest airport in the U.S. for international travel and continues to set new records for passenger growth each month. Biometric boarding is one of the key steps we are taking to pave the way for further growth in the coming years.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launch of biometric boarding follows the 2020 expansion of Simplified Arrival, CBP’s process for international flights that uses facial biometrics to automate manual document checks required for passengers to enter the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
