During the Summit of the Americas, Aeromexico<\/strong> joined the initiative led by Boeing and the International Air Transport Association (IATA)<\/strong> to promote the production and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), as part of the global industry’s commitment to achieve zero net emissions by 2050, of which Aeromexico is a part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this occasion, the airline purchased 6,500 liters of SAF to operate flight AM647 on the Los Angeles – Mexico City route on June 5. The flight reduced almost 3.7 tons of CO2, equivalent to more than 500 cars not circulating for one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first time Aeromexico has used SAF on one of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which is also one of the most environmentally friendly aircraft, reducing noise outside the cabin by up to 60% compared to other aircraft and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by up to 25%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2010 Aeromexico pioneered the use of SAF in Mexico and later became the first airline in Latin America to operate long-haul flights with this fuel. The company is part of the World Economic Forum’s Clean Skies for Tomorrow initiative, which aims for 10% of aviation fuel to be SAF by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within this framework, two round tables were also held to discuss the path that the industry must follow to reach the goal of zero net emissions, as well as the relevance of creating public policies in the region that allow for the effective commercialization and transition to the use of FFS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FFS is a type of fuel made from non-edible plants, agricultural, forestry, municipal or industrial plant waste, among others. It reduces carbon emissions during its life cycle by up to 80%, so its use represents a more immediate possibility to reduce CO2. Other benefits are that it can be blended with petroleum-based fuel and does not require modification of aircraft, engines or fueling infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In alliance with Boeing, seven airlines from around the world joined this initiative by purchasing a total of 379,000 liters of PBS for commercial flights departing from Los Angeles Airport during the Summit, which reduced more than 214 tons of CO2, equivalent to almost 29,500 cars taking a day off the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
