From January to June 2022, Avianca<\/strong> has offset 97.7% of the emissions in its operation in Colombia with duly certified carbon credits. This percentage is equivalent to 401 thousand tons of CO2 and brings the airline ever closer to having a carbon neutral operation in Colombia. In 2022, the airline will allocate approximately USD $4.3M to offset emissions, which will be invested in the purchase of carbon credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline has compensated atmospheric emissions since 2017 and through the search and purchase of carbon credits in the market, they have supported various environmental projects that reduce CO2 emissions and combat climate change in the country. Some of them include reforestation projects such as SKCarbono, which has had an impact in the departments of Caldas, Cauca, Risaralda, Tolima and Valle del Cauca, by developing forest plantations for subsequent sustainable use, in addition to other projects that involve the generation of clean energy. by renewable sources in Huila and Santander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are committed to applying the best environmental practices to reduce, mitigate and offset the emissions generated in the operation and we are proud to have visible results, contributing to the collective effort between airlines, aircraft manufacturers, engine manufacturers and even creators of software programs for air optimization to have a sustainable aviation\u201d, commented Andr\u00e9s Mu\u00f1oz, Manager of Environmental Management of Avianca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the second half of 2022, we expect to offset approximately 480,000 tons of CO2, while we continue working to invest in sustainable environmental projects in the medium and long term.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avianca has also made use of innovation so that the compensation of emissions is within the reach of any traveler, because thanks to its association with the climate technology company CHOOOSE\u2122, when buying a ticket, customers and collaborators have the opportunity to compensate voluntarily the carbon footprint generated by travel, through https:\/\/avianca.chooose.today\/, a digital platform that calculates the exact amount of kilograms of CO2 generated according to the destination to which they flew. This compensation is additional to the one already made by the airline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All these efforts are aligned with the goal proposed by IATA for 2050, the year in which the airline industry has committed to having net zero emissions. Seeking to move towards a carbon-neutral operation, Avianca will complement its compensation efforts with strategies that seek to reduce the production of CO2 in the operation, which include the use of Navblue’s Skybreath software with which, through Big Data technologies, identify further emission reduction opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
