{"id":131526,"date":"2022-09-23T18:30:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-23T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/?p=131526"},"modified":"2022-09-23T21:42:12","modified_gmt":"2022-09-23T21:42:12","slug":"ethiopian-airlines-wins-bid-for-new-nigeria-airline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviacionaldia.com\/en\/2022\/09\/ethiopian-airlines-wins-bid-for-new-nigeria-airline.html","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopian Airlines wins bid for new Nigeria airline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A consortium led by <strong>Ethiopian Airlines<\/strong> is the preferred bidder for shares in new Nigerian airline <strong>Nigeria Air<\/strong>, the country\u2019s aviation minister said on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The airline was one of President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s 2015 election campaign promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u2192 <a href=\"https:\/en\/2022\/09\/easyjet-to-become-first-airline-to-launch-a-dating-app.html\">EasyJet to become first airline to launch a dating app.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethiopian Airlines will own a 49% stake in the new airline, while the Nigerian Sovereign Fund will take 46% and the Nigerian federal government the remaining 5%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/nigeria-airlines-ethiopian\/update-1-ethiopian-airlines-consortium-wins-bid-for-new-nigeria-airline-idUSL1N30U1SQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Reuters<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aviation minister Hadi Sirika told reporters that Buhari\u2019s cabinet was expected to sign off on the shareholding plan in the next few weeks. Nigeria Air would have an initial capital of $300 million and plans to have 30 aircraft within four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria Air will launch with a service between Abuja and Lagos, and add other routes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u2192 <a href=\"https:\/en\/2022\/09\/american-airlines-introduces-new-flagship-suite-seats.html\">American Airlines Introduces New Flagship Suite Seats.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are going to initially bring in six Boeing 737 aircraft and between third and fourth year the airline will be able to acquire up to 30 aircraft,\u201d Sirika said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria has been seeking to set up a national carrier and develop its aviation infrastructure &#8211; currently seen as a barrier to economic growth &#8211; to create a hub for West Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Africa\u2019s most populous country\u2019s previous national carrier, Nigeria Airways, was founded in 1958 and wholly owned by the government.
