Ryanair <\/strong>has decided to definitively close its base at Brussels-Zaventem airport because of the decision of that aerodrome to increase its fares from next April, according to the Irish airline and the Belgian unions, which speak of 59 jobs threatened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline had already closed the Brussels base this winter, but it was not known what would happen after March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Contrary to speculation, Ryanair today confirmed that it will not reopen its Brussels Zaventem base in 2023 due to the airport’s decision to increase prices by 11% from April,” the airline said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Ryanair, “unlike many other EU airports that are either lowering prices to recover traffic lost during the covid pandemic or freezing fares to stimulate passenger growth, Brussels Zaventem has chosen to increase prices once again for airlines and passengers.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This makes Zaventem International Airport “even less competitive compared to other Belgian and EU airports”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the 12 routes the airline operates from Zaventem, six connect to Spanish cities (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Mallorca, Malaga and Girona).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryanair confirmed that it will continue to operate these routes to and from Brussels Zaventem for the summer season on aircraft based outside Belgium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline also specified that its activity at Charleroi airport (southern Belgium) will not be affected by the decision and that from that aerodrome it plans to operate 109 routes during the 2023 summer season, EFE reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
