The airports of the Aena network closed January 2023 with 16,930,100 passengers, thus exceeding the data for the same month of 2019, a pre-pandemic year, by 2.1%, and which also represents an increase of 62.7% with respect to January 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January 2023, 156,500 aircraft movements were handled, representing a 98.1% recovery compared to 2019 and an 18.7% increase compared to 2022; and 74,547 tons of cargo were moved, representing a 96.4% recovery compared to the same month in 2019 and a 97.2% recovery compared to January 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the total number of travelers recorded in January, 16,858,135 were commercial passengers, of which 10,724,913 traveled on international flights, a 99.2% recovery over January 2019 and 72.1% more than in 2022, and 6,133,222 traveled on domestic flights, 7.3% more than before the pandemic and 49.3% more than last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passengers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adolfo Su\u00e1rez Madrid-Barajas Airport recorded the highest number of passengers in the first month of the year with 4,433,209, representing an increase of 1.1% over January 2019, as well as a 64.8% rise compared to January last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 3,078,737 (-6% compared to 2019 and +80.9% compared to 2022); Gran Canaria, with 1,204,146, (+2% and +42.4); M\u00e1laga-Costa del Sol, with 1,120,167 (+10.5% and +60.9%); Tenerife Sur, with 1,093,561 (+7.3% and +52.6%); Palma de Mallorca, with 858. 580 (+2.3% and +53.4%), Alicante-Elche Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez, with 795,148 (+1.3% and +68.1%) and Lanzarote-C\u00e9sar Manrique, with 627,992 passengers, up 10.3% over the same month of 2019 and 54.6% over the passengers reached in January 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Operations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of the number of operations, the airport that recorded the highest number of movements in January was Adolfo Su\u00e1rez Madrid-Barajas, with a total of 30,333 (-7.8% compared to 2019 and +26.7% compared to 2022), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 20. 928 flights (-12.8% and +34.4%); Gran Canaria, with 11,049 (-3.1% and +15.6%); M\u00e1laga-Costa del Sol, with 9,023 (+5.8% and +17.4%); Palma de Mallorca, 8,356 (-1.3% and +20.4%) and Tenerife Sur, with 7,503 and 10.7% more than in the same month of 2019 and an increase of 22.1% compared to January 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cargo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding cargo traffic, the airport that recorded the highest cargo traffic was Adolfo Su\u00e1rez Madrid-Barajas, with 44,231 tons, up 11.3% compared to the same month in 2019 and up 3.9% over 2022. It was followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat airport, with 10,629 tons (-18.1% compared to 2019 and -1.5% compared to 2022); Zaragoza, which recorded 8,095 tons (-34.8% and -32.7%) and Vitoria, with 5,666 tons and 10.1% more than in the same month of 2019 and as well as 3.9% more than in January 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
