Thousands of flights at German airports were canceled on Friday due to a strike by workers demanding wage increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strike, which was called at seven airports in the country, including Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg, affected almost 300,000 passengers and forced airlines to cancel more than 2,300 flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If no meaningful wage agreement is reached with the companies, the summer could be “chaotic” at German airports,” Christine Behle of the Verdi union told public broadcaster RBB-Inforadio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The union is demanding a 10.5% hike for its members, or at least 500 euros, to compensate for high inflation in Germany due to the effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on food and energy prices worldwide, AP reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to the weekly Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, the union’s president, Frank Werneke, indicated that the willingness of its members to go on strike was great and that, in the future, the stoppages could reach “another dimension”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
