Quito’s Mariscal Sucre airport, which replaced the old airport located inside the city, celebrated 10 years of operation this week with the goal of surpassing the more than 5 million passengers it had before the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since it began operating on February 20, 2013, the Ecuadorian capital’s aerodrome has transported some 44.6 million passengers on around 460,000 flights, according to data from Corporaci\u00f3n Quiport, the concessionary company that manages Mariscal Sucre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, it mobilized 4.3 million passengers, so compared to 2019 traffic, which was more than 5 million passengers, the recovery is 86.4% compared to pre-covid-19 pandemic levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, already in some months of 2022, such as August, passenger volume was almost the same as in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has also handled some 2.3 million metric tons of cargo in this first decade, making it one of the Latin American airports with the highest cargo handling volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Quito airport closed 2022 with a record figure of more than 290,000 metric tons of cargo, reported EFE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It has been ten years of many difficulties but of many successes. We are emerging from the pandemic, and in the midst of all this, Mariscal Sucre has shone and moved forward,” commented Quiport’s president and director, Ram\u00f3n Mir\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are currently 15 passenger airlines that connect Quito directly to 14 international destinations and 8 destinations within Ecuador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among its international connections are Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, Houston and Miami, in the United States; Mexico City, San Jos\u00e9, Panama City, Santo Domingo, Buenos Aires, Bogot\u00e1, Lima, Madrid and Amsterdam (Netherlands).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March, Medell\u00edn, in Colombia, will be added, as well as New York, a route that the city had been seeking to recover since 2019, when the now defunct Ecuadorian airline Tame stopped operating it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
