{"id":139533,"date":"2023-05-16T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/?p=139533"},"modified":"2023-05-16T21:57:17","modified_gmt":"2023-05-16T21:57:17","slug":"iberia-to-reduce-up-to-200-tons-of-plastic-on-its-flights-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviacionaldia.com\/en\/2023\/05\/iberia-to-reduce-up-to-200-tons-of-plastic-on-its-flights-this-year.html","title":{"rendered":"Iberia to reduce up to 200 tons of plastic on its flights this year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On the occasion of World Recycling Day, Spain&#8217;s <strong>Iberia<\/strong> takes stock of its Zero Cabin Waste project and its initiative to reduce single-use plastics on its flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both are part of its goal to offer customers a more sustainable travel experience, which is also one of the pillars on which it is developing its sustainability strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u2192 <a href=\"https:\/en\/2023\/05\/iberia-restarts-flights-to-san-francisco.html\">Iberia restarts flights to San Francisco<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, by 2023 Iberia estimates that the reduction of plastics on board will reach 200 tons thanks to all these initiatives that have already been implemented:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Replacement of plastic cutlery, stirrers and straws with more environmentally friendly materials such as bamboo or paper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cardboard band instead of plastic bag to wrap blankets and comforters for linen on board.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elimination of plastic wrapping for headphones, children&#8217;s kit and some toiletry bag items.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of thinner plastic bags to collect linen (blankets, comforters and pillows) during aircraft cleaning operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, plastic cups and some food packaging will be replaced this year with more sustainable alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One million fewer cans and 200,000 fewer plastic containers in the Premium Lounge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This reduction of plastic on board Iberia aircraft has been complemented by a similar action on the ground. In the Premium Lounge lounges at Adolfo Su\u00e1rez Madrid-Barajas airport, cans and plastic containers have been eliminated and replaced with returnable glass. In addition, suppliers have been asked to prioritize bulk over individual formats for some products. Thanks to this measure, waste has been reduced by almost one million cans and 200,000 plastic containers per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recycling 62 tons of glass<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the progressive elimination of plastics on board, Iberia continues to make progress with its Zero Cabin Waste project and, by 2022, managed to recycle 43 percent of cabin waste, which will have a new life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the Zero Cabin Waste program, last year the company included the selective collection of glass generated on board, which made it possible to manage and recycle 62 tons of this material at the catering supplier&#8217;s facilities in Madrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"related-topics\">Related Topics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<div
