The executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC), Carlos Mercado, together with Marilyn Castro, head of Avianca <\/strong>in the Caribbean island, announced Friday that weekly flights between the cities of Bogota and San Juan will be increased from seven to eleven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the document released by the authorities, starting next June 2, Avianca will increase to two its flights between Colombia and Puerto Rico on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, while the frequency on other days will be maintained at one daily flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This new route will be available until August 21, 2023, which means that the airline will offer passengers close to 17,000 seats between the two cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to PRTC projections, the increase in operations will represent an economic injection of approximately $1,800,000 to the local treasury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are very pleased with Avianca’s announcement that they will increase their operations to the island. This announcement is in line with the goals established by the administration of Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi to maximize the development of the tourism industry,” Mercado said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The expansion of options on domestic and international routes leads to an increase in the number of visitors, which has a multiplier effect that results in greater economic activity and job creation,” Mercado added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his opinion, the increase in frequencies by the airline also reaffirms the pattern of passenger growth that Luis Mu\u00f1oz Mar\u00edn International Airport has been experiencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, Rolando Damas, Avianca’s commercial director for North America, Central America and the Caribbean, said: “This is a great contribution to the country because it allows us to promote tourism from different destinations in South America, via Bogota, who are interested in learning about the beauties that Puerto Rico has to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also pointed out that the company is very much in line with the idea of offering more direct connections at times when the markets demand it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
