Aena<\/strong>, the airport operator of Spanish origin, took over the management of S\u00e3o Paulo’s Congonhas Airport, Brazil’s second largest terminal by number of passengers, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“It is Aena’s biggest international milestone. A technically very complex project that only the best professionals in the aeronautical world and in our company can tackle,” said Aena’s president and CEO, Maurici Lucena.<\/p>\n

Aena was awarded the concession for the Eleven Airports Block in Brazil, located in four states (S\u00e3o Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais and Par\u00e1) for a term of 30 years, with the possibility of an additional five years, in a public auction held in August 2022.<\/p>\n

The 11 airports recorded a total of 26.8 million passengers in 2019, 12% of the country’s air traffic in that year. Congonhas-S\u00e3o Paulo has the highest traffic.<\/p>\n

In addition to Congonhas Airport, the airports of Campo Grande and Uberl\u00e2ndia have already been effectively incorporated into the Spanish airport manager’s network since last week.<\/p>\n

The concession of the 11 airports is the largest international operation in the history of Aena, which, under the Aena Brasil brand, will manage another six airports in the Northeast of the country as of 2020 and has a presence in the United Kingdom, where it manages 51% of London-Luton airport, and in Mexico, Colombia and Jamaica.<\/p>\n
