The Spanish airport company Aena revealed Monday its plans to double the size of Congonhas Airport located in S\u00e3o Paulo<\/strong>, the second largest in Brazil, with which it expects to increase the number of passengers by 34%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aena will invest 2 billion reais (about 370 million euros) to build a new terminal that will increase the surface area of the boarding and disembarkation area to 105,000 square meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the expansion, the airport, which has not seen work of this magnitude since its inauguration in 1936, will have the capacity to carry 29.5 million passengers per year from 2028, compared to just over 22 million in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the number of aircraft positions will be increased from 30 to 37, which will be able to receive larger aircraft and allow them to start operating international flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company’s president in Brazil, Santiago Yus, stressed during the presentation ceremony that Aena is a “long-term investor” in Brazil with plans in the country for at least the next 30 years and that they will continue to be “on the lookout” for new investment opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, S\u00edlvio Costa Filho, pointed out that the expansion was a demand from airlines and that “for the first time in history” there will be strategic planning for this airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aena, which took over the operation of Congonhas last October after winning a tender, plans to deliver the works in June 2028 and operate the airport until 2058.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to Congonhas, the company will spend 2.5 billion reais (US$502 million) on the other 10 airports in the country that it won the last bidding process to operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aena manages 79 airports in Spain and the rest of the world, including 17 in Brazil, which transport a total of 40 million passengers a year, a 20% market share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
