The Las Americas International Airport (AILA)<\/strong>, in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), is being remodeled to modernize and a new passenger terminal is planned to be built with an investment of US$250 million, according to the airport operator Aerodom on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aerodom’s general manager, M\u00f3nika Infante, gave details at a press conference about the works, some of which are already underway, which are part of the commitments assumed in the concession contract that allows the company, part of the French international group Vinci Airports, to operate six state-owned airports in the Dominican Republic until 2060.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work is currently underway on the design of the new passenger terminal, which is expected to accommodate the growth in passenger traffic that the Dominican Republic has experienced. Construction will begin in 2025 with an investment of US$250 million, and will have a capacity of four million passengers per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A hotel will also be built, which will consist of three blocks with a total area of 8,000 square meters and will have 150 rooms, some 120 parking spaces, conference rooms, dining room, restaurant, swimming pool and a terrace with bar and restaurant area overlooking the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this regard, Aerodom’s director of non-aeronautical business, Carlos N\u00fa\u00f1ez, informed of the imminent start of the work, which will last 20 to 22 months, and will be operated by the IHG Hotels & Resorts chain under the Holiday Inn brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first of the projects already underway is the remodeling of the departures and arrivals area and the parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, a 3,600-square-meter over-roof is being built on the north terminal to collect rainwater for reuse, and a 1.3 MWP solar power plant is in the final stages of construction, which, together with the existing plants, will bring the airport’s solar park to 5 MWP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAerodom is the leading producer of solar energy for self-consumption in the country,\u201d Infante said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All work is expected to be completed by the end of this year, except for the baggage handling system, which will be completed by June 2025. During its execution, normal airport operations will be maintained and a detailed communication and signage plan will be put in place to minimize disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Las Americas International Airport is the main air terminal in the Dominican Republic due to its location and ranks second in passenger flow in the country, after Punta Cana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
