During the 2025 ICAO Aviation and Climate Week, Airbus and Volaris <\/strong>signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to support the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in Mexico. This joint initiative will contribute to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Voluntary Environmental Fund and includes a feasibility study for local SAF production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico on the Path to Aviation Decarbonization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The study will be conducted by ICAO through the ACT-SAF Program (Assistance, Capacity Building, and Training for SAF), in collaboration with Mexican technical groups working on the national SAF roadmap. This roadmap is co-led by the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) and Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ACT-SAF is designed to help states develop their capacity for sustainable fuel implementation, considering policy frameworks, raw material availability, production pathways, and financing mechanisms. Thanks to Volaris’ support, this marks the first time an airline in the Americas has made an active investment in ICAO’s Voluntary Environmental Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airbus Reinforces Its Environmental Leadership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This project for Mexico adds to the feasibility studies Airbus and ICAO have recently launched in Argentina, Panama, and Peru, solidifying the European company’s leadership in global efforts to decarbonize aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SAF has proven to be a key tool in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. On average, it can cut CO2 emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle, making it a critical component in achieving ICAO’s net-zero emissions goal by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Global Collaborative Ecosystem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Airbus maintains partnerships with airlines, airports, SAF producers, research centers, and aviation authorities worldwide. Its comprehensive approach not only focuses on technological development but also on overcoming regulatory barriers and stimulating both the supply and demand for sustainable fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this new effort in Mexico, Airbus and Volaris position themselves as leaders in the transition toward clean and responsible aviation in Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
