The cornerstone of the plan is the expansion of the terminal area, which will grow from 80,000 to 140,000 square meters. This transformation involves the demolition of the old Terminal 1 and current Piers B and C to make way for a modern, functional, and passenger-focused infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Comprehensive Terminal Modernization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the most notable improvements is the construction of a new pier for non-Schengen flights, featuring a centralized border control system. Additionally, contact stands will be expanded to enhance airline operations, and the baggage handling system will be redesigned for optimal efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/aviacionaldia.com\/en\/2025\/05\/aena-strengthens-nighttime-access-controls-at-madrid-barajas-airport-to-curb-rise-in-homeless-population.html\">Aena Strengthens Nighttime Access Controls at Madrid-Barajas Airport to Curb Rise in Homeless Population<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For passengers, the changes will be tangible from arrival to boarding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The security checkpoint area will increase by 112%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Passport control for departures will multiply by more than five, with a 515% growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The non-Schengen\/flexible waiting and boarding area will expand by 381%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The space allocated for Schengen flights will grow by 126%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Commercial areas will gain 41% more space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>VIP lounges will increase their area by 43%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taxiways and Access Roads Also Evolving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside the terminal expansion, new taxiways will be built to improve aircraft circulation. The current runways have sufficient capacity, but optimizing ground movements will enable more efficient operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside the airport, plans include the redevelopment and improvement of access roads, as well as increased parking capacity and more effective management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Model of Sustainability and Connectivity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lucena emphasized that all actions will adhere to the most stringent environmental standards, preserving the natural surroundings.
