Lufthansa Group<\/strong> is advancing the digitalization of its flight operations with an ambitious technological modernization program. Starting in 2026, the company will begin retrofitting part of its Airbus A320<\/strong> fleet with a system that will improve route efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and decrease CO\u2082 emissions, while also enhancing flight punctuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Key Update for the Efficient Use of Airspace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The plan includes the installation of the FANS-C digital communication system in 134 Airbus A320 aircraft. This technology incorporates the ADS-C EPP function (Automatic Dependent Surveillance — Contract Extended Projected Profile), which automatically transmits four-dimensional flight trajectory information, known as 4D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This data includes position, altitude, direction, and time, and is sent in real-time to air traffic control. Thanks to this precise information, routes can be adjusted to real-time airspace conditions, resulting in more efficient trajectories, lower fuel consumption, and a direct reduction in pollutant emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How 4D Flight Trajectory Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 4D trajectory describes the future development of a flight, considering three spatial dimensions\u2014latitude, longitude, and altitude\u2014along with time as the fourth dimension. The information is generated by the aircraft’s flight management system and transmitted continuously to air traffic controllers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this level of detail, air navigation services can manage airspace more efficiently and optimize each aircraft’s routes during daily operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Implementation in Europe and Regulatory Compliance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The new technology is already in regular use in the Maastricht airspace (MUAC), the first in Europe to meet all necessary requirements for its application. Simultaneously, the Lufthansa Group is collaborating with other air traffic control authorities to extend this type of operation to more regions of the continent as soon as possible, including conducting flight tests with French air traffic control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting in 2028, European regulations will require all newly delivered aircraft and ground-based air traffic control systems in the European Union to incorporate this technology as standard. By modernizing its current fleet, Lufthansa is getting ahead of legal requirements and reinforcing its position as a leader in adopting innovative solutions. By that year, nearly 200 modernized and updated A320 family aircraft will be in service within the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Institutional Support and Certified Fleets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The decision to proceed with retrofitting the existing fleet adds to a previous initiative adopted in 2024, when the group determined that all new A320neo deliveries would feature FANS-C technology. This new phase of the program is supported by the European Commission, which funds up to 50% of the measures through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, the system is certified for the Airbus A320 family and the Airbus A330neo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Strategic Step Towards Trajectory-Based Operations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ADS-C EPP technology represents a fundamental first step in implementing the Trajectory Based Operations concept, which aims to enable dynamic adjustments and route optimization in daily operations, with the involvement of all players in the air system. The Lufthansa Group has defined this implementation as a strategic priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The retrofitting of more than 130 aircraft is part of a broad set of measures aimed at improving fuel efficiency in flight operations and underscores the company’s commitment to more sustainable aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lufthansa’s Five Pillars for More Sustainable Aviation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The continuous improvement of in-flight efficiency is one of the five pillars with which the Lufthansa Group drives more sustainable aviation. This effort is complemented by fleet modernization, the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), a broad range of options for individual travelers and corporate clients to fly more responsibly, and the expansion of intermodality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, for over 30 years, the group has actively supported global climate and meteorological research, solidifying a long-term strategy aimed at reducing the environmental impact of air transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
