In response to this scenario, Airbus and Virgin Atlantic have successfully validated &#8220;Smart Catering,&#8221; an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics-based solution designed to monitor consumption in real-time and reduce the environmental impact of flight operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainability Challenge and Food Surplus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to projections from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Aviation Sustainability Forum, waste volume could reach four million tonnes by the end of 2026 and double by 2040 if current practices remain unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A critical factor is that between 18% and 20% of this waste consists of food and beverages that were never touched. Due to strict international regulations, most of these products end up incinerated or in landfills.
