This figure represents a 34% drop compared to the same period last year, coming in below the €579 million projected by market analysts.

The margin compression was primarily driven by higher operational jet fuel costs combined with downward pressure on airfares on the eve of the Northern Hemisphere’s peak summer season.

Geopolitical Impact and Crude Oil Volatility

The armed conflict in Iran, now in its fifth month, continues to exert severe pressure on the continental aviation industry. Following the collapse of a temporary truce, the resumption of US military strikes on Iranian territory for nine consecutive days drove crude prices above $90 per barrel, dampening travel bookings amid shaky consumer confidence.

“There is a war going on in the world. There is enormous uncertainty. We are right in the middle of the peak July and August period, and I think pricing trends are showing more weakness than strength,” stated Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary during an analyst briefing.

→ Ryanair Records New June Record: 21.2 Million Passengers Carried

O’Leary also forecasted that the airline’s average fares face a mid-single-digit year-on-year decline (between 4% and 6%) during the current quarter.

Fuel Hedging Strategy

Despite the adverse macroeconomic environment, executive management highlighted its strong competitive position relative to other European carriers, underpinned by its fuel hedging position:

Fiscal Year Ending March 2027: 80% of its fuel requirements are hedged at a fixed price of $67 per barrel.

Capitalizing on the Truce: During the brief lull in the conflict, Ryanair locked in 15% of its requirements for the subsequent fiscal year at $85 per barrel.

Spot Market Exposure: The remaining unhedged 20% saw its cost double, spiking to peaks of $150 per barrel during the April–June quarter.

Guarded Full-Year Outlook

Due to prevailing volatility and heavy reliance on close-in, last-minute summer bookings, Ryanair’s board determined that it is premature to issue formal full-year profit guidance for the close of the fiscal year.

<h2
