In a major restructuring of its operational and ancillary revenue policies, low-cost carrier Jetstar <\/strong>has announced a sweeping overhaul of its carry-on baggage regulations. Beginning in February 2027, the airline will charge passengers up to $52 to use the overhead lockers, while simultaneously removing its strict 7-kilogram gate weight limit in favor of a model focused exclusively on bag dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shift brings the Qantas Group subsidiary in line with operational standards used by low-cost carriers globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Operational Rationale: Streamlining Boarding and Reducing Passenger Stress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jetstar stated that the policy change follows extensive research and feedback from both passengers and cabin crew. Both groups highlighted gate weigh-ins and overhead bin congestion as two of the most stress-inducing parts of the airport experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully outlined the reasoning behind the new scheme:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe know that weighing carry-on bags at the gate can be frustrating for our customers and our crew. From February, the main thing customers will need to think about is the size of their carry-on luggage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tully added that the overhaul aims to safeguard the airline’s low-fare model while driving improved on-time performance (OTP):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You only pay for what you need\u2014travelling light means paying less, and you can always add extra capacity if you need it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
