However, TAAG dropped its Madrid route in January 2024 and subsequently scrapped its planned resumption from schedules, severing the link entirely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>South African Airways:<\/strong> The South African flag carrier maintains a presence in the market solely via a codeshare agreement on TAAG-operated flights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these capacity reductions, Luanda continues to see service from TAP Air Portugal, Air France, Lufthansa, Royal Air Maroc, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Airlink, and TAAG, as well as Compagnie Africaine d\u2019Aviation, which launched twice-weekly frequencies from Kinshasa on August 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Operational Headwinds at the New Hub<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The carrier departures coincide with a turbulent operational rollout at the new airport, located roughly 45 kilometers (28 miles) outside downtown Luanda. The facility faces significant hurdles in establishing itself as the regional hub Angolan authorities envisioned during its November 2023 opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Design Capacity Versus Actual Demand<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Built by state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the airport complex was designed to handle a peak throughput of 15 million passengers annually. Official figures, however, highlight substantial underutilization:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Full-Year 2025 Traffic:<\/strong> The airport handled 756,028 passengers across the full calendar year, according to figures released by terminal operator Airport Temporary Operator (ATO).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cumulative Traffic Through February 24:<\/strong> Throughput reached 1,090,861 passengers since the first domestic service launched in November 2024, with international travelers accounting for 444,212 of the total.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The full transition of commercial scheduled operations from the legacy Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport was completed on March 1\u2014more than two years after the new terminal\u2019s official inauguration\u2014marked by South African carrier Airlink shifting its Johannesburg service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Outlook and Operational Targets for 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite weak opening throughput figures, terminal management is holding to aggressive growth targets. In December 2025, ATO Planning and Quality Director Vissolela Chivunda stated that the airport aims to process approximately four million passengers in 2026. Hitting that target will hinge heavily on the facility\u2019s ability to draw new carriers while preventing further route cancellations among remaining foreign airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2
