The expansion of Heathrow Airport <\/strong>with a third runway is unviable under current policies if the United Kingdom aims to achieve its legally binding net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050, the UK government’s advisory committee has warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UK will not be able to expand the London hub airport and simultaneously meet its environmental commitments unless airlines are forced to assume full responsibility for their polluting emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As reported by Reuters, the warning was issued through a technical report prepared by the Climate Change Committee at the request of the British executive itself. The document concludes categorically that there is no credible pathway under current policies for airport infrastructure to grow without violating the net-zero emissions legal target by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the British Labour government backed the construction of a third runway at Heathrow Airport\u2014one of the world’s busiest connecting hubs\u2014on the grounds that this mega-project will drive national economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The government cannot expand Heathrow Airport without requiring the aviation industry to clean up its emissions,” stated Nigel Topping, chairman of the Climate Change Committee, during a press briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
