U.S. carrier Southwest Airlines <\/strong>is leaning toward the Boeing 787 Dreamliner<\/strong> to launch its first widebody fleet and make the leap into long-haul international flights, according to sources familiar with company planning who spoke to Reuters. While deliberations remain confidential and no final decision has been reached, the airline has contemplated an initial fleet of dozens of 787s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final determination will rest with Southwest Airlines’ board of directors, which established a Fleet Oversight Committee last year to steer the carrier’s aircraft acquisition strategy. In September, Chief Financial Officer Tom Doxey confirmed that long-haul international routes remain under evaluation, keeping the project’s scope open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Network Strategy and Long-Haul Competition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Introducing widebody aircraft would place Southwest Airlines in direct competition with major U.S. legacy carriers: Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and American Airlines. The planned expansion aims to prevent customer leakage to rivals while strengthening its Rapid Rewards loyalty program and co-branded credit card business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief Executive Officer Bob Jordan has pointed out that Southwest is not seeking to build a global network comparable to those of its legacy competitors. As he stated in May, a network of 8 to 12 long-haul destinations would be sufficient to capture the vast majority of its customers’ international travel demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
