More than 500 flights were cancelled in Japan on Sunday due to the southwestward movement of the powerful typhoon Haishen archipelago, which has also caused suspensions in the region’s railway network that will continue on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the affected flights had departure or destination in the island of Kyushu and the prefecture of Okinawa, reported the public chain NHK, regions under the influence of the storm since the day before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haishen, the tenth typhoon of the season in the Pacific, is classified as “very strong” by the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA), which, although it noted that the storm has weakened as it progressed, may still be the worst to affect the archipelago in decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weather authorities warned that record-breaking winds, with gusts of more than 250 kilometers per hour, torrential rains, waves and cyclonic swell are expected in the Kyushu region between tonight and Monday, and have urged the population to evacuate early to the relevant shelters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
