A massive power outage has disrupted transportation across the Iberian Peninsula this Monday, affecting both trains and flights. However, airports remain operational thanks to contingency systems, though delays are expected throughout the day.
Impact on Spanish Airports
According to Aena via its X account (formerly Twitter), Spanish airports are maintaining operations using backup generators. Despite this, delays are likely to accumulate depending on the difficulties passengers and crew face in reaching the terminals.
Flight Radar reported that Madrid-Barajas Airport saw no departures or arrivals for at least thirty minutes around 12:30 p.m. Air traffic gradually resumed afterward.
Airline Situation
Sources at Iberia confirmed to EFE that no flights have been canceled so far and that their systems are operating at 100%. Vueling, meanwhile, stated on X that they are working to minimize operational impacts but warned that power outages in Spain and other countries could affect “some” of their flights.
Partial Power Restoration
Red Electrica, via X, announced that the peninsula’s power grid began recovering voltage in the northern and southern regions. The outage occurred around 12:30 p.m. for reasons still unknown.
Situation in Portugal
In Portugal, port authorities activated emergency generators at Porto and Faro airports, allowing essential operations. Lisbon Airport is functioning with greater limitations but maintains some landings and takeoffs.
A source from ANA-Aeroportos told Lusa news agency that Madeira and Azores airports were unaffected. Additionally, Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN) confirmed the widespread outage across the Iberian Peninsula and parts of France, stating that service restoration plans were underway.
