Etihad Airways to Transform Ground Experience with New Generation of Global Lounges
Etihad Airways has unveiled the next phase in the evolution of its premium ground product. Leading this strategy is a comprehensive overhaul of its flagship lounge at London Heathrow Airport, slated for completion in the summer of 2027, which will serve as the blueprint for a broader rollout of exclusive lounges across its international network.
This initiative is part of an ambitious $20 billion capital expenditure program aimed at taking delivery of new aircraft and executing an end-to-end overhaul of the passenger journey. The program also features a dedicated $1 billion retrofit allocation to modernize its existing fleet.
“Beyond Borders” Design Language: From Sand to Superstructure
The Heathrow lounge will be the first ground-based facility to integrate the carrier’s new “Beyond Borders” design philosophy, developed to establish a seamless visual and sensory transition between aircraft cabins and terminal environments.
Conceived in Abu Dhabi, this architectural and aesthetic concept is rooted in the “from sand to superstructure” ethos, drawing inspiration from the emirate’s natural landscape, modernist architecture, and rapid modernization. Its airport implementation focuses on three core pillars:
- Material and Lighting Continuity: Shared palettes, tactile finishes, ambient lighting schemes, and brand signatures mirror the styling introduced across its latest aircraft cabins.
- Localized Adaptability: Rather than rolling out identical cookie-cutter footprints, each lounge integrates tailored design touches reflecting the local market, culture, and operational profile of the hub.
- Integrated Passenger Journey: Elevated brand consistency across touchpoints via synchronized upgrades to fine dining, wellness zones, amenities, high-speed connectivity, and hospitality standards.
Delegates at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) trade show were given a first look at the design through a scale showcase structure and an all-new bar concept set to anchor the London facility.

Dedicated Spaces for First, Business, and The Residence
Etihad’s next-generation lounges will retain distinct zoning engineered specifically for high-yield customer segments:
- Dedicated, high-capacity areas tailored for Business Class travelers.
- Private, quiet sanctuaries curated exclusively for First Class guests.
- Bespoke private VIP suites reserved for guests traveling in The Residence, the airline’s flagship ultra-luxury three-room suite.
Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways, underscored the strategic weight of the investment:
“Our new lounges are a critical pillar of the Etihad guest experience, and London Heathrow marks the start of an exciting new chapter. It will be the first airport lounge to fully embody our new design language on the ground, creating a space that feels distinctly Etihad and inherently connected to Abu Dhabi. The core premise of Beyond Borders is ensuring our guests experience a familiar, cohesive brand identity wherever their journey takes them. That does not mean every lounge or aircraft cabin should be a carbon copy, but rather that an unmistakable common thread connects them through interior design, elevated hospitality, culinary offerings, wellness, and service delivery.”
Fleet Modernization Synergies
The lounge rollout coincides with the debut of Etihad’s next-generation Airbus A330neo cabins at ATM, along with the rollout of the Beyond Borders cabin interior aboard its upcoming Airbus A321LR aircraft. Both aircraft types reflect the carrier’s push to bridge the gap between passenger experiences in the air and on the ground.
The 2027 opening of the redesigned London Heathrow lounge will kick off a new operational phase amid the most aggressive fleet and network expansion in Etihad’s history, establishing the benchmark for all future premium lounge developments across its global footprint.
