President Donald Trump may issue an executive order to prevent mass layoffs on U.S. airlines affected by the decline in travel due to the coronavirus pandemic.

White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows told the Political Journal in an online interview that he is willing to solve problems if Congress does not act on new financial aid packages for the coronavirus.

«We are looking at other executive actions,» Meadows said. «If Congress doesn’t go to work, this president is going to work to solve some problems, so hopefully we can help the airlines and prevent some of those employees from being laid off.

On Wednesday, American Airlines announced that it would reduce its workforce by 40,000 employees, including 19,000 in involuntary layoffs, by October if it did not receive an extension of government aid.

Meadows said he had spoken to American Airlines on Monday, and to United Airlines and Delta Airlines, who also warned that they would have to lay off thousands of employees.

A new financial aid package for the coronavirus for businesses and individuals has been stalled in Congress since early August.

Negotiations between the Senate, the House of Representatives and the White House failed to overcome differences over the amount of aid and other details of the package.

Meadows told Politico that he is not optimistic that negotiations can resume soon.
