Iberia Airport Services is incorporating electric vehicles, called “Green Pushback”, at the Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez and Barcelona-El Prat airports, which are controlled by remote control to move the company’s planes, EuropaPress reported.

According to the company, this “innovative” remote-controlled electric airplane tractor is used to tow the plane backwards before the departure of each flight.
Thus, at the end of October, Iberia Airport Services will have eight units of this equipment that, as explained by the company, in addition to being very quiet, each vehicle will allow a reduction of 23,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, increase operational safety with more precise guidance and, at the same time, improve punctuality.

These vehicles have a great autonomy and their 80 volts (V) battery allows to fly up to 28 planes without the need of recharging. Specifically, the model incorporated by Iberia Airport Services (Mototok Spacer 8600) makes it possible to tow narrow-body aircraft such as the A319, A320 and A321 families with which Iberia and Vueling carry out all their short and medium-range flights.
Electric Tractors in the Hangars
Iberia Maintenance has also adopted this same technology for aircraft taxiing to the hangars in Madrid and Barcelona when they need to be serviced and repaired.
In addition, it has two other units of these vehicles -one at Madrid airport and another at El Prat-, also for towing narrow-body aircraft.
