Alaska Airlines has agreed to buy 23 737 MAX 9 aircraft from Boeing, both companies said Tuesday.
The new agreement brings Alaska Airlines’ total orders and options for the 737 MAX to 120 aircraft.

The new order comes less than three weeks after European airline Ryanair also placed an order for 75 MAX.
“We like to maintain a strong balance sheet so that in times like these we can be counter-active and take steps to fundamentally improve the company’s competitive position,” Alaska Airlines CEO Brad Tilden told Reuters.
The agreement accelerates a shift in the airline’s fleet from Airbus to Boeing. Alaska Airlines operated a fleet of Boeing aircraft until it acquired Virgin America in 2016.
Today, Alaska Airlines operates 166 Boeing 737 NGs and 71 Airbus A320s.
