American Airlines warns that thousands employees could be laid off.

American Airlines warned that 13,000 of its employees could be laid off when a second round of pandemic relief expires at the end of March.

In a new letter from company executives Doug Parker and Robert Isom, American Airlines said it will begin issuing furlough warning notices to 13,000 employees starting Friday. In December, American was able to bring back employees it furloughed – and give them some back pay – when the U.S. Congress authorized a second round of the Payroll Support Program for airline workers, CNN reported.

In the letter, the airline says it is also opening voluntary early and long-term furlough programs for front-line employees.

Last week, United Airlines sent notices of possible furloughs to 14,000 of its employees citing non-recovering travel demand.
